TOPEKA -- The No. 1 ranked Washburn Lady Blues turned in an 89-66 win over the No. 2 ranked Drury Lady Panthers in a match up of the top two ranked teams in the USA Today/ESPN WBCA Coaches Poll Saturday night. With the win, the Lady Blues improved to 9-0 on the season while Drury falls to 8-1. The win was Washburn's 47th straight non-conference win and its 28th straight overall.
The Lady Blues led from start to finish building a a 19-3 lead 6:14 into the game as Drury started 1 for 6 from the field compared to Washburn's 8 of 12 from the field. Both teams struggled for a stretch from the field and the Lady Panthers would cut the lead to nine at 20-11 after the third media timeout, but they would get no closer the rest of the half as Washburn took a 39-21 lead into the break.
In the second half, Washburn shot a blistering 57 percent from the field and 17 of 18 free throws pushing its lead to as many as 25 in the second half as Washburn rolled to the 23-point win.
Jennifer Harris led Washburn with a career-high 33 points on 10 of 19 shooting from the field and 10 of 13 from the charity stripe. She also had four assists, three blocks and two steals for the Lady Blues.
Megan Sullivan, Brooke Ubelaker and Bojana Standardizes each scored 13 points. Dani McHenry recorded a career-high 10 rebounds adding seven points.
Washburn forced 16 Drury turnovers which turned into 22 Lady Blue points.
The Lady Blues will be back in action on Tuesday, Dec. 20 when the take on West Texas A&M at 7 p.m. CST from Las Vegas, Nev.
