Lady Blues wrap up 4th straight MIAA title with win over Emporia State

TOPEKA - The No. 1 ranked Washburn Lady Blues won their fourth straight MIAA regular season champion and fifth overall with a 73-57 over No. 5 ranked Emporia State in Lee Arena. With the win, Washburn improves to 25-0 and 14-0 in the MIAA while winning their 44th straight game. Washburn locks up the No. 1 seed for the MIAA Tournament in Kansas City March 2.
Washburn trailed in the first half by four on a couple of occasions as late as 9:54 to go in the first half by an 18-14 count. The Lady Blues rallied to tie the score at 27 with 1:47 to go in the half and would take the lead for good on a couple of Jennifer Harris free throws at 29-27 and the Lady Blues would not look back taking a 32-27 lead into the break.
In the second half, Washburn pushed their lead to as many as 18 points as they held the Lady Hornets to 9 of 28 shooting from the field and 0 of 14 from 3-point land. ESU went the last 4:04 of the game without a field goal. The Lady Blues shot 58 percent from the field and 47 for the game holding ESU 29 points below their season scoring average of 86.1 per game.
Harris led all scorers with 32 points on 10 of 24 shooting and 11 of 14 from the free throw line. Brooke Ubelaker added 19.
Andi McAlexander came off the bench to score 15 to lead the Lady Hornets.
The Lady Blues will be off on Saturday and will play their final two games of the regular season on the road at Northwest Missouri on Feb. 22 and then wrap up the season on 25th at Central Missouri.
