April 14 , 2006

TOPEKA -- Washburn Lady Blues Basketball head coach Ron McHenry has announced the Karla Tailele (pronounced Tah-lay-lee) from Hutchinson Community College has signed National Letter of Intent to play for Washburn next season.
“Karla is a true point guard, but she has a nice shot from 3-point range which will allow here to play the two guard as well for us this season,” McHenry said.
Tailele, a native of Laie, Hawaii, started 13 games a sophomore for the Lady Dragons, before suffering a season-ending knee injury. She was averaging 9.3 points, 2.4 assists and 2.4 rebounds per game hitting 27-of-63 3-point attempts. She scored a season-high 18 points against Independence 46-40 at the 2005 Jayhawk Shootout and 18 against Brown Mackie this season.
As a freshman, Tailele played in all 31 games, starting 25. She scored in double figures 12 times. She was second on the team in free throws and was one of three players to shoot 35 percent or better from 3-point range.
Tailele was a four-year starter at point guard and Kahuku High. She led her 2003 and 2004 to the state championship games. She was second-team Eastern Division as a senior and honorable mention in her other three seasons. She was named the Red Raider Most Outstanding Player in 2004. Tailele also played volleyball and soccer at Kahuku. She was a two-year honorable mention soccer player and was named the team's most outstanding player in 2004.
The Lady Blues finished the 2005 season 32-1 and won their fourth straight MIAA regular season championship and their second straight postseason championship.
