No. 6 Lady Blues to hold off Kangaroos in exhibition basketball

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The No. 6 Washburn Lady Blues held off a late charge by the Division I Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos in a 73-70 win on Tuesday. The Lady Blues will have their final exhibition tune up against the Ichabod golf team on Friday at 5 p.m. in Lee Arena. An Ichabod exhibition game against an alumni team will follow the Lady Blues. Admission is free as the teams and the Washburn Student Athlete Advisory Committee are sponsoring a canned food drive that will benefit the United Way.

The Lady Blues hopped out to a 7-0 lead over the Kangaroos as they led the entire first half taking a 29-26 lead into halftime. The Lady Blues held the 'Roos to 25 percent from the field and Washburn hit 12 of 33 from the field for a 37 percent average. Nine different Lady Blues scored in the half led by Corkey Stiger's 7 points.

In the second half, the Kangaroos rallied to take the lead by three in the second half at 45-42. Washburn rebounded to regain the lead and pushed it to as many nine at 65-56 on a pair of free throws by Megan Sullivan. But the Kangaroos cut the lead to one on two separate occasions before Washburn's Jessica Aebi hit six straight free throws to close out the game in the final 25 seconds.

Stiger led the Lady Blues with 18 points off the bench and Brooke Ubelaker had 14. Amanda Holmes recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Sullivan added 10 rebounds along with 7 points.

The teams tied on the boards with 47 each.
