No. 2 Lady Blues to face NAIA Southwestern College on Monday . . .
The No. 2 Washburn Lady Blues will take on NAIA foe Southwestern College on Monday, Dec. 4 in Lee Arena. The Lady Blues have been off from games since a 90-40 win over Lynn University in the Premeir Mortgage/AM 580 WIBW Holiday Classic in Lee Arena on Nov. 25.

Washburn head coach Ron McHenry has posted a 163-33 (.832) record overall and 83-23 (.783) record in the MIAA with four consecutive MIAA regular season championships and the 2005 NCAA National Championship. He was named the Lady Blues head coach prior to the 2000-01 season. He is fourth among active women's NCAA Division II Coaches in winning percentage and has the 10th most wins in MIAA history. McHenry was named the MIAA’s Coach of the Year in 2005 and in 2006 and the Division II Bulletin National Coach of the Year in 2005.
Southwestern College’s Dave Denly is in his ninth year as the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Southwestern College. He has built a program from scratch into one of the best in the KCAC. Denly’s overall record at the helm of the Lady Builders’ is 154-92. He guided his team to two consecutive 20-win seasons, setting school records in overall wins and conference wins (13). In seven seasons, Denly has coached 13 All-Conference players, 16 Academic All-Americans and 27 Academic All-Conference athletes. The Lady Builders have also had the KCAC Player of the Year three of the seven years in under Denly. Before he took over the women’s program at Southwestern College, Denly served as an assistant coach for Brad Horstmann and the men’s program at Southwestern College. During that time the Moundbuilders qualified for the National Tournament and won the KCAC conference tournament.

(Nov. 25) TOPEKA, Kan. - TOPEKA – The No. 6 ranked Washburn Lady Blues picked up a 50-point win in the final game of the Premier Mortgage/AM 580 WIBW Radio Holiday Classic in a 90-40 win over Lynn University.
The Lady Blues (4-0) fell behind early trailing 9-8 to the Fighting Knights, but going on a 25 to 4 run over the final 7:27 of the first half, Washburn was never challenged as they took a 48-18 lead into the break.
In the second half, Washburn’s defense held Lynn to two field goals in the first 5:45 of the half pushing their lead to 38 points with 13:15 remaining in the game. Washburn would stretch the lead to as many as 54 points in the half.
Brooke Ubelaker led all scorers as she recorded 13 of her 17 in the first half as she hit was a perfect 3-of-3 from the field (all 3-pointers) with four free throws – all in 14 minutes of action. Amanda Holmes scored a career-high 15 and Megan Sullivan and Renata Germano each scored 10. Holmes had her second double-double of the season and the third of her Washburn career adding 11 rebounds.
In the game, Ubelaker went over the 1,400-point mark in her career lifting her total to 1,401 points, which is sixth on the all-time scoring chart.

Tonight’s meeting is the eight between the two squads with the Lady Blues leading the series 4-3.
Counting tonight, the Lady Blues have played the Moundbuilders only twice since the Feb. 3, 1973. The Lady Blues won 97-61 in Lee Arena on Nov. 17, 2001 and Southwestern College won 52-42 on Feb. 3, 1973 in Winfield.
Last Meeting with Southwestern College - Nov. 17, 2001 — The Washburn Lady Blues coasted to a season opening 97-61 victory in Lee Arena. Behind junior forward Crystal Walker, the Lady Blues bolted to a 16-4 lead to open the game on consecutive break layups. Washburn finished the opening half with a 22-of-37 shooting performance from the field (59.5%), including Walker’s 19 points on 9-of-11 shooting. Lora Westling got hot in the second half, finishing with 13 in the second and 19 in the game on 7-of-14 shooting from the field. Walker finished with a career-high 24 points and recorded her third double-double of her career by adding 10 rebounds. Washburn’s 97-point total was its highest since a 120-86 victory at Missouri-St. Louis during the 1990-91 season. Kristy Chapman added 16 points and Gosia Czarnecka 10 for the Lady Blues.

The Moundbuilders are 6-2 and they are taking on Kansas Wesleyan on Dec. 2 in Salina. Illena Perez leads Southwestern with 16.7 ppg. Perez was a KCAC all-conference pick as a junior.
Last time out for Southwestern - Dec. 2 - After leading by 10 late in the second half, the Lady Builders held off a rally by Kansas Wesleyan and opened their KCAC schedule with a one-point 64-63 win over the Lady Coyotes Saturday night at Muir Gymnasium in Salina. Kara Beal’s 14 points paced the Lady Builders offense. She was followed closely by Kinsey Colclasure who came off the bench and added 12 points. Caylin Larsen’s seven rebounds led the Lady Builders, who were out-rebounded the Coyotes 38-32 in the win.
The Lady Builders shot 38.5 percent from the field, while KWU shot 43.4 percent from the field.
