TOPEKA, Kan. – The No. 2 Washburn Lady Blues used a pair of big runs to start each half and forced 26 turnovers leading to 36 points in an 88-56 win over Southwest Baptist. The win was the Lady Blues’ 10th straight while improving to 15-1 and 6-1 in the MIAA. The Lady Bearcats fell to 10-5 and 2-4 in conference play. The Lady Blues will return to action on Saturday as they play host to Pittsburg State at 5:30 in a game which will be broadcast live on KTWU regionally in Kansas.
Washburn opened the game on a 20-4 run over the first 7:52 of the game on 9-of-13 shooting from the field. Southwest Baptist cut into the lead and eventually cut in back to six at 31-25 with 3:08 remaining in the half. After back-to-back 3-pointers by Brooke Ubelaker and a third by Corkey Stiger, Washburn took a 40-31 lead into the locker room at the break.
In the second half, Washburn started the half on a 37-10 run over the opening 11:46 of the half pushing the lead to 36 at 77-41 and continuing on for the 88-56 win.
Ubelaker led the Lady Blues with 18 points, pacing four Washburn starters in double figures followed by Amanda Holmes with 16, Cindy Keeley with 11 and Megan Sullivan with 10.
Livia Brito led the Lady Bearcats with 12 points and Erika Souza reached double digits with 10.
Washburn outrebounded SBU by a 40 to 31 count while connecting on 35 of 69 shots from the field for a 51 percent shooting mark. SBU was 22 of 57 from the field for a 39 percent clip.
Notes:
• The SBU bench was the first bench to outscore the Lady Blues bench this season. SBU scored 26 bench points compared to 25 for the Lady Blues.
• Corkey Stiger had a Washburn-high eight rebounds to lead the Lady Blues.
• Washburn improved to 92-10 in games in Lee Arena under head coach Ron McHenry.
• Washburn now leads the series with SBU 22-10 in 32 all-time games.
• Brooke Ubelaker scored in double figures for the 88th time in 117 career games.
• Amanda Holmes three blocks against SBU gives her 50 for her Washburn career, which is 12th on the WU all-time chart.
• The 35 field goals made against SBU was a season high as were the 69 field goal attempts.
• The 19 steals against SBU is a season high.
