Lady Blues fall for 1st time this season in MIAA Tournament finals

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The No. 25 ranked Washburn Lady Blues tennis team suffered their first defeat of the season in the MIAA Championship Tournament falling 5-2 to Emporia State. With the loss, the Lady Blues fell to 19-1 on the season, not counting two wins over junior college competition, and will now wait to find out their NCAA North Central Regional assignments later this week.
The Lady Blues lost two of the three doubles matches to begin the afternoon. The win came at No. 1 doubles as the team of Diana Goldsmith and Julie Huyberechts, the No. 3 team in the region, knocked off the No. 1 team of Natalie Villaflor 9-7. The No. 2 team in the region, ESU’s Marcela Bayon and Karly Schultz topped No. 7, Amber Raindl and Lauren Harris 8-5. The Lady Blues’ No. 3 doubles duo of Audrie Miller and Lisa Coleman suffered only their second loss of the season dropping an 8-6 decision.
In singles play, Goldsmith improved to 20-0 at No. 1 singles and 24-1 on the season in a 6-1, 6-0 win over Bayon. Schultz topped Miller at No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-2. Luina knocked off Raindl 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 at No. 3 singles and Villaflor wrapped up the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Huyberechts at No. 2 singles.
Washburn was looking to win their first MIAA Championship since the 2004 season.
