TOPEKA - The first day's action has been completed in the NCAA Division
II/ITA North Central Regional Women's Tournament, hosted by Washburn
University.
On the singles side, seven of the top eight seeds advanced into the
round of 16. The only upset was the No. 2 seed Michelle Bailey from
Winona State who dropped her opening match 6-3, 6-1 to Mesa State's Kara
Killenberg. In the final 16, there are 12 players representing MIAA
schools. Among the seeded players remaining Washburn, Emporia State and
Southwest Baptist each have two remaining. The No. 1 seed Diana
Goldsmith and No. 8 seeded Julie Huyberechts are both from Washburn.
Emporia State also has No. 3 seeded Marcela Bayon and No. 6 seeded
Natalie Villaflor. Southwest Baptist has the No. 4 seed in Jolee Cook
and No. 7 seeded Ivetta Wolframm.
In doubles play, the top four seeds advanced into the quarterfinals. The
ESU duo of Natalie Villaflor and Lacey Luina are the No. 1 seeded team
followed by the second seeded Washburn pair of Julie Huyberechts and
Diana Goldsmith. The three seed is the team made up of Missouri
Southern's Michelle Hall and Kristen Meschede. The fourth seeded team
belongs to Emporia State's Marcela Bayon and Karly Schultz.
Action will resume tomorrow at 9 a.m. at the Kossover Tennis Center
between 21st and 29th streets on Gage Blvd. in Topeka.
