Women second, men third at MIAA Tournament

April 19, 2002

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. Ñ The Washburn University men's and women's tennis finished third and second respectively in the 2002 MIAA Tournament at Cooper Tennis Center in Springfield, which concluded Friday night.

Sophomore Holly Munro (Topeka-Highland Park) captured a No. 5 singles crown over Jessica McKinney of Truman State 6-2, 6-3, while senior Aisha Butt (Clay Center) and sophomore Erin Underwood (Topeka-Washburn Rural) topped Rosa Tapia and Adriana Hernandez of Northwest Missouri State 8-4 to win the No. 1 doubles title.

Butt made the finals at No. 1 singles, as did Caitlin Day at No. 3 and Linsday Sullivan at No. 4 singles. Day (Topeka-Topeka West), who was the top seed at No. 3, had to withdraw from the finals after suffering from severe flu symptoms.

Defending No. 1 singles champion Fernando Sierra fell to Southwest Baptist's Adras Bori, SBU 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Desmond Tan and Nathan Hurd also made the finals at Nos. 4 and 5 singles respectively.

The finish concludes the season for both squads, as the Lady Blues fail to make the Midwest Region Tournament for the first time in five seasons. Washburn hosted womenÕs regionals each of the last four seasons. Northwest Missouri State repeated as team titlest in both men's and women's action.
