Collins announces 2006 recruiting class
(April 6) TOPEKA - Head soccer coach Tim Collins added six student-athletes from Kansas to his roster for the 2006 season as he announced the fourth recruiting class in the short history of Washburn soccer. Collins, who started to program in 2003, added two players from the Topeka, three from the Kansas City area and one from Wichita. (Nov. 28) TOPEKA - For the first time in school history, the Lady Blues soccer team has placed members on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-Central Region Team. Senior defender Lora Westling and freshman forward Jessica Mainz were named second team all-region and Lauren Schwindt received third team all-region honors. (Nov. 22) OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues soccer team placed nine members on the MIAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll that was relased today by the MIAA Office. To be eligible, student-athletes are named to the list under the following criteria: 1.) The student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or better at the qualifying institution; 2.) The student-athlete must have at least two terms of attendance at the member school, excluding summer sessions; 3.) The student-athlete must be a sophomore, junior or senior in athletic eligibility; 4.) Student-athletes inactive due to redshirt or hardship qualification are not eligible. Those from Washburn who were named to the honor roll were MF Anna Fahey, MF Amanda Geist, GK Jenna Hatlestad, D Meagan Horvath, MF McKinley Rainen, D Erica Schmidt, MF Lauren Schwindt, F Jolene Silovsky and D Lora Westling. The Lady Blues finished the 2005 season with a school record 11 wins completing the season with an 11-5-4 and a tie for second place in the MIAA with a 7-3-4 record. (Nov. 9) OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - The Washburn soccer team had eight players earn All-MIAA honors and Tim Collins was named MIAA Coach of the Year, which was released by the conference office Wednesday. Senior defender Lora Westling and freshman forward Jessica Mainz were first team selections. Mainz joined Missouri Southern's Nikki Llewellyn as a unanimous first team selection. Goalkeeper Jenna Hatlestad, midfielder Lauren Schwindt and forward Jolene Silovsky were second team picks. Defenders Lisa Fahey and Kaydi Hooker and midfielder Amanda Giest were honorable mention selections. The Lady Blues finished 11-5-4 overall and a team-best second place finish in the MIAA at 7-3-4 in their third season of existence as a soccer program. (Oct. 30) JOPLIN, Mo.-- The Washburn Lady Blues soccer team finished its season with a 0-0 tie at Missouri Southern as Jenna Hatlestad picked up her seventh shutout of the season. The Lady Blues out shot the Lions 14 to 9 incluing 5-1 in the two overtime periods. The tie, gave the Lady Blues 25 points in the MIAA standings. Missouri Southern, has 22 points in the standings and the Lions still have a two matches to play. Central Missouri has 21 points and the Jennies have two matches to play as well. Also in the mix is Truman who has two matches left as well has 21 points too. The regular season for the MIAA wraps up Nov. 6 so the Lady Blues will have to wait a week to discover its final place in the MIAA. (Oct. 29) BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The Washburn Lady Blues soccer team improved its record to 11-5-3 overall and 7-3-3 in the MIAA with its 2-1 win over Southwest Baptist on the road. The Lady Blues fell behind early 1-0 as SBU scored 2:28 into the match. The Lady Blues tied the score at 1-1 when Jolene Silovsky scored her ninth goal of the season on an assist from Jenna Lawless in the 20th minute of the match. Lisa Coleman scored the game-winner in the 81st minute. It was her fourth goal of the season. Washburn moves into first place in the MIAA standings. The Lady Blues will wrap up the season tomorrow at Missouri Southern, the current second place team in the conference race. (Oct. 26) TOPEKA -- The Washburn Lady Blues soccer team improved to 10-5-3 and 6-3-3 in the MIAA with a 2-1 win over Emporia State. With the win, the Lady Blues sweep the season series from the Hornets. Washburn moves into a first place tie in the MIAA standings with Missouri Southern. Freshman Jessica Mainz scored the Lady Blues first goal 5:02 into the match on an assist from Lauren Schwindt as Washburn took a 1-0 lead into halftime. ESU's Brandie Booth scored her sixth goal of the season with 62:39 showing on the clock, but Mainz scored the game-winning goal 28 seconds later to put the Lady Blues up for good. Jenna Hatlestad picked up her 10th win in goal for Washburn Washburn out shot the Hornets 19 to 12. There were 28 fouls called in the match. It was Washburn's final home match of the season as they will travel to Southwest Baptist on Saturday and Missouri Southern on Sunday to wrap up the season. (Oct. 22) MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Washburn Lady Blues soccer fell 2-1 to Central Missouri State at the Lady Blues Soccer Field Saturday. Carrie Twellman capitalized on a penalty kick 5:32 into overtime to seal the 2-1 win for the Jennies after a Washburn foul created the kick. Washburn got on the board first 38:56 into the match on a goal by Jolene Silovsky on a crossing pass from Jessica Mainz. The Jennies answered less than two minutes later with a goal by Hazel Cox. The Lady Blues (9-5-3, 5-3-3) will host Emporia State 4 p.m. Wednesday in their final home regular season match. Neither team scored in either extra period as the teams tied 1-1 in the Lady Blues first MIAA match this weekend. The Lady Blues (9-4-3, 5-2-3) will take on Central Missouri at 2 p.m. tomorrow in Topeka, in a match that was originally scheduled for 4 p.m. The Lady Blues outshot the Bearcats 24-14 overall, including a 13 to 3 edge in the first half. Lauren Schwindt scored the game-winning goal for Washburn in the 12th minute of the match. It was her third goal of the season. (Oct. 5) TOPEKA - Washburn's Traci Nigg converted a Jolene Silovsky corner kick in the 86th minute was the winner for the Lady Blues in a 2-1 win over Southwest Baptist in a match played at Topeka's Hummer Sports Park Soccer Field. With the win, the Lady Blues improved to 7-4-2 and 3-2-2 in the MIAA. After a 45-minute lightning delay, both teams came back on the field with just over 11 minutes to play. The Bearcats scored the only goal of the first half in the 35th minute on a penalty kick. Jessica Mainz put the Lady Blues on the board converting a penalty kick for her ninth goal of the season. The Lady Blues out shot the Bearcats 9 to 7, and had a 6 to 0 advantage in corner kicks. It was a physical match that saw 30 combined fouls called with 19 whistles on the Bearcats. (Sept. 28) St. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Washburn Lady Blues soccer team dropped a 2-1 match against Missouri Western. The Lady Blues' Jessica Mainz scored her school single-season record eighth goal of the season, but it was not enough as the Griffons connected on a penalty kick in the 78th minute for the winner. Washburn's Jenna Lawless had the assist on Mainz' goal in the 18th minute of the match which gave the Lady Blues a 1-0 lead. The Griffons would tie it just after the start of the second period in the 49th minute leading to the winner on the penalty kick. (Sept. 26) EMPORIA, Kan. - Washburn's Jessica Mainz scored on a free kick with :04 remaining in the second overtime propelled the Lady Blues to a 2-1. The goal was Mainz' seventh goal of the season, tying the school record for most goals in a year. ESU scored the first goal of the match, but Jolene Silovsky recorded her sixth goal of the season in the 79th minute off a pass from Lisa Coleman to knot the score at 1-1. Jenna Hatlestad played all 109:56 in the match in goal for the Lady Blues picking up the win. She had seven saves in the win. The five wins by the Lady Blues this season ties a school record for the most wins in a season. The Lady Blues' Jessica Mainz recorded her sixth goal of the season as she scored an unassisted game-winner in the 52nd minute. (Aug. 28) CROOKSTON, Minn. -- The Washburn Lady Blues soccer team set a new school record for the most goals scored in a match with a 6-0 pasting over Minnesota-Crookston Sunday afternoon on the road. Lady Blues' freshman Jessica Mainz, after scoring Washburn's only goal in a 1-0 win over Moorhead State on Friday, scored a team-high two goals and added two more assists, finishing with six total points, snapping a school record for most points in a single match. Lauren Schwindt added a goal and three assists to set another school high-water mark for the most assists in a single match.
