Ichabods sweep at Truman, take four-game series with Bulldogs
(April 5) KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Ichabods picked up two more MIAA wins with a sweep at Truman Wednesday afternoon. Washburn took the first game, 3-1, behind a five-hit outing from Jake Lenherr and then got the second one, 6-1, with a strong outing from Adam Schroeder. Both pitchers went the distance. The Ichabods (16-11, 5-3 MIAA) will now play four games at Fort Hays State this weekend starting with a doubleheader Saturday at 2 p.m. In the first game the Bulldogs got a run in the first but then Jesse Schmidt hit a two-run home run, his second of the year, in the top of the second inning. The Ichabods added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Sam Sissom drove in Tyler Blankenship. Lenherr allowed five hits and one walk as he struck out seven. In the second game the Ichabods went up 2-0 in the first inning. Schmidt singled in Sissom and then Mark Stoltz drove in Michael Hammersmith on a groundout. After allowing a run in the bottom of the first, Washburn scored four runs in the third inning to give Schroeder some breathing room. Chris Atkins and Sam Sissom each singled in two runs. Schroeder allowed eight hits and walked just one in the nine-inning game. The Ichabods, who wrapped up the four-game series with TSU with four wins, played error free baseball on the day. Hard-fought effort ends in split for Ichabods against Griffons
(April 3)TOPEKA – Despite 24 runs and 34 hits in a doubleheader against Missouri Western Wednesday, the Ichabods had to settle for a split with the Griffons at Falley Field. The two teams combined for 19 extra-base hits in the regulation doubleheader that took just over six hours to play and featured just four errors. Washburn (14-11, 3-3 MIAA) took the first game 14-7 and then dropped the second one 13-10. The Ichabods will head to Truman Wednesday for a noon doubleheader. In the opener the Ichabods blasted three home runs. Jesse Schmidt and Chris Atkins both hit their firsts of the year and Mark Stoltz belted his second, a grand slam in the sixth inning to left field. Nick Barnes was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and three RBI while Atkins went 2-for-4 with four RBI. Jeff LaCerte pitched the win, improving to 3-0 on the year. He allowed five runs (two earned) on 10 hits and one walk. In the second game the Ichabods led for most of the way until MWSU went ahead in the ninth with a four-run rally. Washburn then went down in order in the bottom of the ninth to end the game. Schmidt was 2-for-5 with a double and a triple for three RBI while Stoltz had two more runs batted in. Ichabods drop pair of MIAA games, Sunday's games moved
(April 1) Topeka - The Ichabods dropped their first conference games of the year as Emporia State swept them, 5-2 in the first game and 9-1 in the second game, Saturday afternoon at Falley Field. The Ichabods (13-10, 2-2 MIAA) will play Monday at 3 p.m. against Missouri Western State. The doubleheader was scheduled for Sunday but was moved due to scheduled rain.The Hornets opened up the first game with two runs and then the Ichabods got them back in the bottom of the second when Jessie Schmidt walked and Tommy Mangino doubled to right field. Chris Atkins then drove in Schmidt with a hit to center and the center fielder bobbled to ball, allowing Mangino to score. Jake Lenherr pitched the complete game, allowing five runs on eight hits. He struck out six and walked none. Lenherr is now second all-time at ESU with 209 1/3 innings pitched. With 176 strikeouts in his four years, he also moved within 12 strikeouts of the top of the ESU career chart. In the second game Emporia State pounded 20 hits while the Ichabods were kept to eight. FHSU fights back to sweep Ichabods
(March 29) TOPEKA - The Ichabod baseball team was swept by 21st-ranked Fort Hays State, 10-2 and 4-3, Wednesday afternoon at Falley Field. Washburn, now 13-8, will look to improve its 2-0 MIAA record when it hosts No. 8 Emporia State Saturday at 1 p.m. in a doubleheader at Falley Field.In the opener the Tigers scored a run in the top of the first but the Ichabods got it back quickly in the bottom half after back-to-back doubles from Michael Hammersmith and Luke Manners. Fort Hays State then scored nine unanswered runs before the Ichabods got on the board again in the sixth. Lucas Hackman was hit by a pitch and then Tyler Blankenship moved him to third on a double down the leftfield line. Chris Atkins then grounded out to third base, driving in Hackman. In the second game Jake Loveless brought a no-hitter into the sixth inning but gave up a hit the leadoff hitter. Loveless ended up allowing three hits and all four runs. After being down a run in the third inning, Washburn tied the game when Hammersmith drove in Sam Sissom. The Ichabods took their first lead of the day when Hammersmith singled in a run and then Calvin Iversen was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. FHSU got a run in the sixth after breaking up the no-hitter and then got two more the next inning to get the win. Wild flirts with no-hitter in Ichabod sweep over TSU
(March 26) TOPEKA - Lucas Hackmann drove in the game-winning run in extra innings in the first game and then Randy Wild took a no-hitter into the seventh inning of the second game as the Ichabods swept Truman Sunday afternoon at Falley Field. Washburn (13-6, 2-0 MIAA) won the first game 2-1 and took the second game 4-0. The Ichabods will host Fort Hays State Wednesday in a doubleheader at 2 p.m. The Ichabods fell down early in the first game, giving up a run to the Bulldogs in the first inning, but got it back in the fifth when Luke Manners singled in Sam Sissom. In the first extra inning Jessie Schmidt doubled down the leftfield line and then advanced to second on a dropped fly by the TSU right fielder. He then scored the walkoff run on Hackmann's single through the left side. Adam Schroeder pitched the complete game, giving up four hits and just the first-inning run. He struck out four and walked one. In the second game Wild had a chance for his second career no-hitter, but Truman's Sean Zaborowski singled to right field with no outs in the seventh. Wild then got a double play and a strikeout to end the game. The Ichabods got an RBI single in the first from Schmidt, a sacrifice fly from Chris Atkins in the second and a two-run double by Tyler Blankenship in the sixth inning. Strong outing from Lenherr leads to win, snow shifts upcoming schedule
(March 18) WARRENSBURG, Mo. - Jake Lenherr pitched seven shutout innings, earning his second win of the year as the Ichabods defeated Bemidji State 6-2 Saturday at the Holiday Inn Express Classic. Washburn improved to 11-6 and Lenherr struck out nine and allowed two hits and two walks. Jesse Schmidt was 3 for 5 and Sam Sissom drove in a pair of runs with an RBI single in the fourth inning. Lenherr's nine strikeouts moved him into second on the Washburn career record list with 170. Sissom, who is 10 for 10 in stolen bases this year, is now second on the WU career record list with 75. Snow storms in the area have shifted around Washburn's upcoming schedule. Wednesday's MIAA opening doubleheader at Northwest Missouri State has been moved to May 2 at 1 p.m. while the game at Nebraska-Omaha on Thursday has been canceled with no makeup date. With Washburn and Fort Hays State both losing games from their schedule, the two will play four games when they meet in April instead of three. Wining streak ends for Ichabods with loss to Nebraska-Omaha
(March 17) TOPEKA - The Ichabods gave up 12 runs in the first three innings and fell 16-1 to Nebraska-Omaha Thursday afternoon at Falley Field. The Ichabods (10-6) will play Bemidji State at 1 p.m. Saturday in a tournament in Warrensburg, Mo. The game was moved to an earlier start because of rain in the forecast. Tyler Blankenship drove in the only WU run with a single in the fifth that scored Tommy Mangino, who reached on an error. Ichabods cruise to four-game sweep over UMC with doubleheader win
(March 15) TOPEKA - Jake Loveless earned his first win of the year with a four-hit shutout over Minnesota, Crookston as the Ichabods swept the Golden Eagles Wednesday at Falley Field. Washburn took the first game 10-0 behind 12 strikeouts by Loveless and then got the sweep in the four-game series with an 18-1 win in the night cap. The Ichabods will take on Nebraska-Omaha Thursday at 3 p.m. to end a 13-game home stand. Jesse Schmidt was 2 for 3 with three RBI. His single in the first inning drove in the first two of six runs scored in that inning. Chris Atkins also had a two-run single in the inning. Nick Barnes had a hit and two walks during the game and scored three runs. Loveless struck out a career-high 12 batters in his second complete game shutout. He loaded the bases in the first inning after a walk, double and hit batter but then struck out the next three batters to get out of the jam. He had six strikeouts after the first two innings. In the second game Josh Ray, making his first start of the year, struck out seven batters and allowed one run on two hits. Barnes was 2 for 3 with four RBI and Randy Wild 3 for 4 with three RBI. Ichabods sweep Minnesota, Crookston to open series
(March 14) TOPEKA - The Ichabods pitched 18 strikeouts in the first game of a doubleheader sweep over Minnesota, Crookston Tuesday afternoon at Falley Field. Washburn took the first game 20-7 and then won the night cap 16-6. The Ichabods, now 8-5, will take on UMC again on Wednesday in another doubleheader. The game was changed from a noon start to a 2 p.m. start. The Golden Eagles fell to 0-2 as they played their first games of the year. In the first game Jeff Lacerte pitched the first four innings, getting nine strikeouts and giving up seven runs on six hits. Only one run was earned. Matt Traxler pitched two innings with six strikeouts and Lindsey Prestia pitched the final inning and struck out the side. Chris Atkins and Bryce Wood each had four RBI and Wood was 3 for 4. Jesse Schmidt was 2 for 4 and scored four runs. In the night cap Mark Stoltz hit his first home run of the year and Randy Wild connected on his fourth. Calvin Iversen and Michael Hammersmith each had three RBI. Iversen batted 3 for 5 and Schmidt was 3 for 4. Brett Unrein pitched the first five innings, getting the win and striking out five. Ichabods get split with UIU, schedule changed for UMC series
(March 11) TOPEKA – Adam Schroeder pitched a complete game, 10-2 win Saturday afternoon as the Ichabods salvaged a split and a win in the finale of the three-game series with Upper Iowa. The Peacocks took game one 9-3. Washburn is now 6-5 and will play a four-game series with Minnesota Crookston starting Tuesday at 2 p.m. with a doubleheader. The series was scheduled to start Monday, but snow in Minnesota kept UMC from leaving on time. The two will complete the series with a twin bill at noon Wednesday. Schroder struck out six batters as he improved to 2-0. Randy Wild hit his third home run of the year, a three-run shot down the right field line in the fifth, and Nick Barnes hit his first as an Ichabod with a solo blast to center in the fourth. Ichabods drop game to Upper Iowa, 11-9
(March 10) TOPEKA – Upper Iowa rallied for four runs in the seventh inning to defeat Washburn 11-9 Friday afternoon at Falley Field. The Ichabods dropped to 5-4 and will take on the Peacocks in a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday. Randy Wild gave up seven UIU runs in the first two innings but slowed down the Peacock offense after that, allowing the Ichabod bats to take the lead. Luke Manners doubled in a run in the first and Sam Sisson and Tommy Mangino both grounded in a run in the second. Washburn took the lead in the third with four runs. Jessie Schmidt singled to lead off the third inning. Å hit batter and a bunt single moved him to third. He then scored on a wild pitch. Tyler Blankenship, now batting .500, drove in a run on a single, Lucas Hackmann scored on an error, and Chris Atkins grounded in a run to cap the scoring in the inning. The Ichabods scored two more in the fifth but then reliever Troy Baird allowed four in the seventh to break a five-game winning streak for WU. Strong pitching leads Ichabods to sweep over Mary
(March 3) Topeka – The Ichabods got a pair of complete games out of their starters as they swept Mary Friday and won the first five games of the six-game series with the Marauders, improving their record to 5-3. In the first game Jake Lenherr pitched a shutout, striking out nine with one walk as the Ichabods won 6-1. In the second game Adam Schroeder threw 14 strikeouts, giving up five hits and a walk as the Ichabods cruised to an 11-0 win. The two teams' series finale on Saturday has been canceled due to rain. Sam Sissom was 5 for 7 in the leadoff spot, driving in a run and scoring two. Luke Manners hit his first homer of the year in the second game and drove in three. In the second game Washburn sent 14 batters to the plate in the first inning and everyone of them got at least a hit. Randy Wild had a double and a single in the inning, driving in a run. The Ichabods scored 10 runs in the inning, all with two outs. The Ichabods got in the scoreboard in the first game when Sissom led off with a single. Mary’s third attempt to pick him off at first was missed by the first baseman and he advanced all the way to third. Calvin Iversen then drove him in on a sacrifice fly. Ichabods improve to .500 with sweep over Mary
(March 2) TOPEKA – The Ichabods cruised to an 8-2 win in the first game and a 10-3 win in the second game over Mary Friday as they climbed to .500 at 3-3 for the first time this year. Washburn and the Marauders will play another twin bill Friday at 1 p.m. at Falley Field. The Ichabods have won the first three games of this six-game series. In the first game Friday Jeff LaCerte earned his first win with seven strikeouts and no walks as he allowed one run on six hits. Randy Wild homered for the second straight game, this one a three-run shot that was part of Washburn’s seven-run second inning. Jesse Schmidt was 2 for 4 with a pair of RBI and Tyler Blankenship was 2 for 3 with a run scored. In the second game Brett Unrein threw six innings, striking out six and allowing three runs on eight hits and a walk. Chris Atkins had an RBI triple and Michael Hammersmith was 3 for 4 with a pair of RBI. Luke Manners knocked in a pair of runs with a double. Ichabods cruise by Mary for season's first win
(March 1) TOPEKA – Randy Wild had a home run and a triple, driving in four runs, as the Ichabods baseball team cruised to a 13-3 win over the University of Mary to get its first win of the year and improve to 1-3. The two teams will play 1 p.m. doubleheaders Thursday and Friday and then play another single game Saturday at noon to close out the six-game series. The firs six batters of the game for Washburn reached base safely and the Ichabods plated five runs in the inning. Luke Manners had an RBI double, Jessie Schmidt had a two-run triple and Michael Hammersmith and Tyler Blankenship each drove in a run as the Ichabods batted around in the inning. The Ichabods’ bats came alive again in the fourth inning as Blankenship doubled and Chris Atkins singled in a pair of runs and then scored on an error on a Tommy Mangino single. With two outs in the inning, Wild drove in two runs on a triple to right field and then Hammersmith drove him in with a double. The Ichabods enacted the 10-run rule in the sixth as Schmidt opened up with a single and then Wild hit the first homer of the year for WU. Matt Traxler then pitched the top of the seventh for Washburn, retiring the side in order and ending the game early. Jake Loveless started for Washburn and struck out seven batters in 3 2/3 innings. Up 5-0 in the fourth, he gave up three runs, one earned, and was replaced by Sam Keim. Loveless did not pitch long enough to get the win so Keim improved to 1-0 as he gave up a hit in 2 1/3 shutout innings. Ichabods fall in extra-inning marathon at Rockhurst
(Feb. 27) KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Ichabods baseball team fell 7-6 in 14 innings Monday afternoon at Rockhurst to drop to 0-3 on the season. Washburn will go for its first wins of the year during a six-game series with Mary (N.D.) starting with a single game Wednesday at 2 p.m.andy Wild pitched eight innings, striking out seven while allowing four runs off seven hits. He walked just one and two of his runs were unearned. The Ichabods had a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the ninth but Rockhurst pushed across the tying run off an error, a stolen base and an RBI single. The Ichabods went ahead in the 12th when Tyler Blankenship’s sacrifice fly drove in Michael Hammersmith. The Hawks tied it in their half on an error and RBI single. Rockhurst scored the winning run with a two-out double, a wild pitch and an RBI single. Washburn fell behind early in the game by scores of 1-0 and 3-1. Calvin Iversen’s two-out single drove in Hammersmith in the second inning and Tommy Mangino doubled in a run in the third. The Ichabods got a pair of runs in the fourth on a single by Lucas Hackman and a ground out by Luke Manners. The Ichabods then went the next five innings without a run. Sam Sissom was 3 for 6 with a run scored and Blankenship drove in a pair of runs. Hammersmith got on base three times off a pair of hits and a walk and he crossed the plate three times. Ichabods swept in season-opening doubleheader
(Feb. 24) TOPEKA – The Washburn baseball team let a one-run lead in the seventh inning slip away as No. 27 Wayne State completed a two-game sweep of the Ichabods Friday afternoon at Falley Field. WU will play at 3 p.m. at Rockhurst Monday. The Ichabods dropped to 0-2 after 7-3 and 9-5 losses. In the second game the Ichabods had a 5-4 lead going into the final inning thanks to a 2-for-4, three RBI outing from Jesse Schmidt and a pair of runs scored from Sam Sissom. Adam Schroeder pitched the first six innings, giving up five hits with three strikeouts. Lindsey Prestia came on in the final inning and game up four runs, one earned, to get the loss. In the first game the Ichabods were kept off the scoreboard until the fifth inning when Luke Manners singled in a run. In the sixth Randy Wild drove in a run on a fielder’s choice and Chris Atkins scored on an error. Tommy Mangino, in his WU debut, was 2 for 2 at the plate with a double. Baseballl game moved ahead to Friday against Wayne State
(Feb. 22) TOPEKA - The Ichabod baseball team's Sunday doubleheader with Wayne State (Neb.) has been moved ahead to this Friday. The 12 p.m. game at Falley Field will be the season-opener for Washburn. The two teams will try and get the games in ahead of the cooler weather expected for Sunday.

Sunday's baseball opener canceled for Ichabods
(Feb. 16) TOPEKA - Sunday's baseball season opener against Baker at Falley Field has been canceled due to expected cold weather and snowfall. No date has been set for a rescheduled game. The Ichabods will open the season February 26 with a home doubleheader against Wayne State (Neb.) starting at noon.

Jerad Head signs professional contract with the Cleveland Indians
(May 17)
TOPEKA -- Washburn baseball player Jerad Head became the first Ichabod since Rick DeHart in 1992 to sign a professional contract when he put his name on the dotted line for the Cleveland Indians. (more)

Lenherr named to 2nd team all-MIAA baseball squad, 5 others honorable mention
(May 16)
The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced Monday that six members of the Washburn baseball squad were named to the All-MIAA baseball team. Jake Lenherr was named to the second team, while Nolan Deitrch, Jerad Head, Jesse Schmidt, Sam Sissom and Randy Wild were honorable mention selections. (more)
