Steve Ice |
Steve Ice enters his 25th year as the Head Athletic Trainer at Washburn University.
Ice took over the Ichabods and Lady Blues programs in the fall of 1982 after a three-year assignment as the Associate Athletic Trainer at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Penn.
During Ice’s tenure at Washburn, the athletics training staff has seen the addition of the Petro Allied Health Center as a valuable resource for the prevention and rehabilitation of WU student-athletes.
Ice received his bachelor’s degree from St. Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City, Kan., in 1977 and earned his master’s from the University of Kansas in 1980. Ice also served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer for the Jayhawks from 1977 to 1979.
In addition to his duties at Washburn, Ice works in conjunction with the Tallgrass Orthopedic Group of Topeka.
Steve and his wife Janis have four children; Brian, Patrick, Jenna and Alyssa. |
John Burns |
John Burns is in his fourth season as a Certified Athletic Trainer after joining Washburn Athletics in August of 2003.
Burns, a native of Salina, Kan., has job responsibilities with both athletics and academics. His primary athletic training responsibilities is with the football team, and academically, he oversees and teaches athletic training students as the Clinical Education Coordinator in the Athletic Training Education Program for the HPEES department.
He is an alumnus of Washburn, receiving his bachelor’s degree in 1992. Burns then earned a Master of Science degree in exercise and sports science from the University of Arizona in 1994. Prior to returning to Washburn, he was a staff athletic trainer at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Mo., and most recently, the Coordinator of Sports Medicine for Integris Baptist Regional Health Center in Miami, Okla., where he also served as a consultant athletic trainer for the Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Junior College Norsemen.
John is married to Linda Oldham Burns, also a Washburn alumn and scholarship coordinator in the financial aid department, and they have a son, Tyler. |

Michael Ramirez |
Michael Ramirez came to Washburn University in 1997 as a Certified Athletic Trainer. He is employed full-time by St. Francis Health Center. Michael acts as a liaison between athlete, coach, physician and
rehabilitative professional and is responsible to coordinate delivery of services for Washburn University athletes between field, physician's office
and rehabilitation clinic.
Michael, a native of Topeka, earned a bachelor's degree from Washburn in 1994. He then earned a Master of Science in Education degree from the University of Kansas in 2003. Prior to joining St. Francis Health Center in 2005, Michael was employed as an athletic trainer at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center for eleven years and helped develop a similar affiliation with Washburn University Athletics.
Michael and his wife, Kathy, reside in Lawrence with their son, Chase, and daughter. |

Tracy Boyd |
Tracy Boyd started at Washburn in the fall of 2004 as a part-time Certified Athletic Trainer. Tracy is also an Adjunct Clinical Supervisor for the HPEES Department and Athletic Training Education Program.
Tracy, a native of Topeka, received a Bachelor's degree in
Education from the University of Kansas in 1990. After student teaching in K-12 Physical Education in Lawrence and Topeka, Tracy began a twelve-year career in Athletic Training at Healthsouth Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Center in Birmingham, Alabama.
Tracy moved back to Topeka with her husband, Chip, and their sons, Ross and Cooper, in 2002. After two years out of Athletic Training, Tracy returned to the field with the Lady Blues Soccer and Ichabod Baseball teams. |
