Huske named first team all-region catcher
(May 11) TOPEKA - Washburn junior catcher Kala Huske added another individual award to her first team all-MIAA honors as she was named first team all-North Central Region. Huske was the only Lady Blue to receive either first or second team honors. This season Huske led the Lady Blues with a ,343 batting average and tied for the team lead with 29 RBI. She also batted .386 in MIAA play. She will now advance to the national ballot which will be voted on by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association voting members. Two Lady Blues named first team all-MIAA
(May 9) OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues had two softball players named to the MIAA First team that was released today after a vote of the conference's coaches. Junior catcher Kala Huske and sophomore outfielder Ashley Webb were both named to the first team. Freshman first basemen Brooke DeVader was the lone Lady Blue named to the second team. Lady Blues season ends in heartbreaking loss to Bearcats
(May 3) MARYVILLE, Mo . - The Washburn Lady Blues softball team came to a heartbreaking end as they fell 7-6 in eight innings to the Bearcats. The Lady Blues needed to sweep Northwest Missouri in order to qualify for the MIAA Postseason Tournament. Their final record is 30-26. The Lady Blues won the first game 6-2 behind two home runs by Ashley Webb as she went 3-4 with 3 runs scored. Webb became only the 14th Lady Blue to hit two home runs in one game. Kelly Swygert picked up the win. In the second game, the Lady Blues the Lady Blues rallied to score three runs in the top of the sixth to knot the game at three. After the Bearcats tied it in the bottom of the inning, the Lady Blues scored two more in the top of the seventh to take a 5-4 lead. The Bearcats tied it in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. Brooke DeVader led off the eighth with a home run, but it was not enough as the Bearcats scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth for the win. Lady Blues split with Baker in home finale
(April 27) TOPEKA - The Washburn lady Blues split a non-conference doubleheader with Baker in their home finale. The Lady Blues fell in the opener 6-2 as the Wildcats scored three runs in the first and third innings en route to the win. Ashley Webb and Brooke DeVader each had two hits. In the second game, the Lady Blues fell behind 2-0 before ripping off six unanswered runs leading to the 6-2 win. Brooke DeVader and Brianne Paletta each had home runs in a three-run fourth inning propelling the Lady Blues to the win. Kelly Swygert picked up the complete-game win allowing two runs and striking out three. The Lady Blues will be in action this weekend at the Mankato State tournament. Lady Blues swept by Griffons
(April 26) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues were swept in an MIAA doubleheader by Missouri Western as the Griffons used the long ball pounding out 10 home runs. The Lady Blues fell in game one 5-3. Brooke DeVader had two hits in the opener. In the second game, the Lady Blues fell behind 3-0 after the Griffons scored three in the first, but ralled to tie the score at four after three innings. Malarie Fellers had a three-run homer in the third, her third of the season and Amanda Carey had two doubles. The Lady Blues will be back in action on Wedensday against Baker in the home finale. Lady Blues fall at TSU
(April 24) KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - The Washburn softball team fell 4-3 and 7-0 at Truman State Sunday afternoon. Brooke DeVader went 2-for-3 with an RBI in game one as Truman scored three unearned runs in the sixth to take the lead. Kala Huske got two of Washburn's five hits in game two against TSU's Loni Wedemeier. Wedemeier took the wins in both games by pitching 1 2/3 scoreless relief in game one and tossing a shutout in game two. Lady Blues softball team splits with No. 7 Hornets
(April 20) TOPEKA, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues split a doubleheader with No. 7 ranked Emporia State Wednesday night at Patty Dick Field in the Hummer Sports Complex in Topeka. The Lady Blues took game 1 4-3 in nine innings as Amanda Carey's 2-out double scored Malarie Fellers who singled earlier in the inning. Erin Pierce picked up the win pitching a career-high nine innings allowing three earned runs and striking out four pitching the complete-game. Carey finished the game with 2 RBI and Mandy Tarbutton was 3-for-5 with 2 RBI. The Lady Hornets came back to take the nightcap 4-0 as the Lady Blues stranded 10 baserunners. Lady Blues swept by Gorillas in double dip
(April 18) PITTSBURG, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues were swept by Pittsburg State in an MIAA doubleheader Monday in Pittsburg. In game one, the Lady Blues fell 9-7 after allowing a 7-run lead slip away as the Gorillas scored seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Kala Huske was 4-for-4 in 2 RBI and 3 runs scored while hitting her fifth home run of the season. In the second game, the Gorillas capitalized on four Lady Blue errors enroute to a 14-4 win. (April 9) Hays, Kan. -- The Washburn Lady Blues couldn't muster much offensively in a 1-0 and 2-1 doubleheader sweep at Fort Hays State Saturday. Erin Bryant gave up just one run (unearned) on seven hits in 8 1/3 innings on the mound in game one. The game was scoreless before Trista Leiker's single drove in Alyson Garmatz for the extra inning win for FHSU. Lady Blues softball team ranked No. 25 in NFCA Poll
(April 6) TOPEKA -- The Washburn Lady Blues were ranked No. 25 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association National Poll that was released today. The Lady Blues are 24-11 and 3-3 in the MIAA. They dropped from 23 in poll after going 6-2 last week including a 4-1 showing at the Nebraska-Omaha Invitational. The Lady Blues doubleheader with Pittsburg State was postponed today until April 18. Lady Blues go 4-1 at UNO Invitational
(April 2) OMAHA, Neb. - The No. 23 ranked Washburn Lady Blues imporved to 24-11 after going 4-1 at the Nebraska-Omaha Maverick Invitational. The Lady Blues opened with three wins over Augustana 9-1, South Dakota 5-4 and Minnesota-Duluth 5-0 on Saturday before falling to Minnesota State-Mankato 8-3 after allowing six unearned runs. The Lady Blues rebounded to top Nebraska-Omaha 5-2 to finish the weekend. All of the games were regional games. Kala Huske batted .429 over the weekend. Lady Blues use long ball to gain split with Lions
(March 30) TOPEKA -- The Washburn Lady Blues snapped a school record with three home runs in their second game of their doubleheader with Missouri Southern to gain a split of the games. The Lady Blues used the three home runs to turn a 5-0 Lion lead into a 6-5 Washburn win after scoring all six of their runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. (March 20) TOPEKA -- The Washburn Lady Blues swept Bemidji State 7-1 and 3-1 at the Washburn Softball Complex Sunday morning. Lady Blues sweep Fort Hays State; Pierce tosses no-hitter
(March 14) TOPEKA -- The Washburn Lady Blues swept a doubleheader from Fort Hays State winning game one 8-0 in six innings and taking the second game 1-0 behind Erin Pierce's no-hitter and Jackie Sells' solo home run in the fifth. Pierce recorded only the sixth no-hitter in Washburn history and the first since Ashley Stewart no-hit CMSU on April 18, 2003. Sells added a home run in the first game as well. (March 12) JOPLIN, Mo. - The Washburn Lady Blues won the Missouri Southern's Terri (Mathis) Zenner's Invitational by topping the host Lions in the championship game 7-3. The Lady Blues went 5-1 over the two-day event. On Friday, they topped Southwest Baptist 10-0 and then shutout Missouri-St. Louis 11-0. On Saturday, the Lady Blues beat Pittsburg State 5-0 before falling to No. 3 ranked Oklahoma City 3-2. Lady Blues softball team to open 2005 season in San Angelo, Texas
(Feb. 1) The Washburn Lady Blues softball team will open the 2005 season in the Angelo State Tournament this weekend, Feb. 4-5 in San Angelo, Texas. The Lady Blues will take on Eastern New Mexico at noon on Friday and then play University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma before entering pool play on Saturday. The Lady Blues will take part in tournaments in St. Cloud, Minn. Lady Blues softball team adds two in early period

Lady Blues softball team goes 4-1 at Sooner Fall Tournament
(Sept. 26) TOPEKA - The Washburn Lady Blues softball team went 4-1 over the weekend at the University of Oklahoma Fall Invitiational. Their only loss was to the host Sooners, who finished last season ranked No. 6 in the nation. The Lady Blues opened weekend play beating St. Gregory 10-2 and followed that win with a 10-0 shutout over Neosho County. The Lady Blues fell to the Sooners 5-0 beforerebounding to top Southwestern Oklahoma 3-2 and Seminole State 12-2. This fall, the Lady Blues are 12-2 and will finish their fall season at the Jayhawk Classic Oct. 2-3 in Lawrence.
Lady Blues softball team goes 4-1 at Creighton Tournament
(Sept. 11) Omaha, Neb.- The Washburn Lady Blues softball team went 4-1 at the Creighton Invitiational Tournament falling only to the D-I host Blue Jays. The Lady Blues topped College of St. Mary 6-0, D-II regional opponent Augustana 5-1, fellow MIAA member Missouri Western 7-4, and Peru State 5-0 before falling to the Blue Jays 12-1. Creighton was an NCAA D-I Tournament squad team last season that advanced to the regional semifinals after winning back-to-back conference titles. |
