Lady Blues volleyball squad lands two on AVCA All-American teams
(Nov. 28) The Washburn volleyball team had two players earn ACVA All-America honors, which was released by the American Volleyball Coaches Association Monday. Outside hitter Monica Miesner was a second team selection, while right side hitter Tessa Jones was named to the third team. Both were first team AVCA All-South Central Region selections. (Nov. 17) FLORENCE, Ala. - The No. 8 Washburn volleyball team fell behind early and never got on track in its 30-22, 30-19, 30-21 loss to No. 7 Truman State in the South Central Region seminfinals at Flowers Hall Friday. The Lady Blues hit a season-low .080 for the match and finished the season 35-3. Each of Washburn's three losses came to the Bulldogs. After the Lady Blues took a 7-6 lead in game one, Truman State reeled off three straight points and never looked back to cruise to the victory. WU hit .077 for the game and had several serving and ball handling errors. WU got up 9-6 in game two but struggled hitting for the second straight game. WU finished with a dismal .021 hitting performance in the game and Truman outscored the Lady Blues 24-10 to finish with the big win.Truman got off to an early 15-7 lead and never looked back in game three, finishing the match with a .317 hitting percentage in the game. Sarah Shearman had eight kills in the game for the Bulldogs, including the final two to seal the victory. Tessa Jones, who responded from a severe ankle injury, was the lone bright spot for the Lady Blues with 12 kills. Washburn, which improved to 13-0 and 2-0 in the MIAA will host No. 1 Truman 1 p.m. Saturday. The Bulldogs are 12-1 and 2-0 in the MIAA. The Lady Blues hit .248 for the match compared to .138 for the Griffons to cruise to victory. Mandi Cox had a team-high nine kills and .389 hitting percentage.
