Defense dominates in Washburn Blue/White Spring Game
(April 1) TOPEKA - Ichabod senior placekicker Connor Sabel kicked three field goals in the Washburn Blue/White Spring game pacing the Blue Squad to a 9-0 win. Sabel kicked field goals of 36-, 46- and 38-yards in the game that was played at Hummer Sports Park in Topeka while the Yager Stadium turf is undergoing its field rennovation. The Blue squad, made up of the Ichabods first team defense dominated giving up only 7 yards rushing allowing three first downs by the White team. Sophomore A.J. Patterson led the Blue team with 33 yards rushing while redshirt freshman Beau Wofford was 9 of 19 for 95 yards. The Blue's running back tandem of senior Trent Hearn and junior Ra'Shawn Mosley were held to 24 yards rushing on 11 attempts. Junior Jordan Brill was 8 of 16 for 70 yards passing. On defense, senior defensive tackle Trey Lewis led the Blue defense with five tackles, three of those for loss. Sophomore Eric Lawrence had two sacks. Leading the White team defense were junior safety Erin Beck and redshirt freshman defensive tackle Ben Bianchino with six tackles. Bianchino added four tackles for loss and three sacks. (Feb. 1) TOPEKA - Ichabod head coach Craig Schurig has announced 17 high school signees who will join the Ichabods next fall. The Ichabods finished the 2005 season with their first MIAA Championship and NCAA Playoff appearance."We're excited with our class," Schurig said. "We've addressed needs on both sides of the ball and we believe that we have signed talented players who will help us build on the success that we have this past season. This was a very competitve recruiting season and our coaching staff did an outstanding job this season finding our needs and addressing them." (Jan. 17) Ichabod senior-to-be Fletcher Terrell and former Ichabod linebacker Grant Gould each received All-America honors by the Don Hansen Footbll Gazette. Terrell, a defensive back for the Ichabods received first team All-America honors. Terrell led the MIAA in interceptions (8 -- 0.67 per game) and kickoff return average (30.8 ypr), and returned two kickoff for touchdowns, including one for an MIAA record-tying 100 yards. Terrell was also a first team All-American Daktronics pick. Gould, a linebacker, received second team all-American honors. Gould finished second in the MIAA in tackles last season with 10.7 per game and finished his career as the Ichabods' all-time leading tackler. (Nov. 22) OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- The Washburn Ichabod football team placed 12 members on the MIAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll that was relased today by the MIAA Office. To be eligible, student-athletes are named to the list under the following criteria: 1.) The student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or better at the qualifying institution; 2.) The student-athlete must have at least two terms of attendance at the member school, excluding summer sessions; 3.) The student-athlete must be a sophomore, junior or senior in athletic eligibility; 4.) Student-athletes inactive due to redshirt or hardship qualification are not eligible. (Nov. 18) TOPEKA, Kan. – The Washburn Ichabods season came to an end in the second round of the NCAA Playoffs with a 42-32 loss to Northwest Missouri. The Ichabods finished the season 9-3 while the Bearcats advance to the NCAA quarterfinals against Pittsburg State who topped West Texas 41-3. Jordan Brill was 16 of 29 for 296 yards and 3 TD’s, hitting Mike Odupitan for five receptions and 118 with the two TD’s to the senior. Trent Hearn finished the game with 61 yards rushing and his season with 1,203 yards snapping a 22-year old school record held by Dino DeLisa who rushed for 1,185 during his sophomore season in 1983. (Nov. 15) It's the NCAA Playoffs as the No. 12 ranked Washburn Ichabods take on the No. 21 ranked Northwest Missouri Bearcats. The Ichabods, who won the MIAA Regular season championship, received a bye No. 12 in the 24-team national playoffs by virtue of its No. 2 seed in the Southwest Region. The Bearcats, who are the No. 6 seed in the region, topped No. 3 seed Angelo State in San Angelo, Texas by a 45-14 score. It is the first NCAA Championship appearance for the Ichabods and only its third postseason playoffs appearance of any kind as they played two NAIA Playoffs games. Senior Wide receiver Mike Odupitan, senior offensive lineman Rudy Su'e and junior kick returner Fletcher Terrell were first team selections for the offense. Su'e was a unanimous selection. Junior defensive lineman Trey Lewis, senior linebacker Grant Gould and junior defensive back Fletcher Terrell were Washburn's first team defensive selections. Terrell was a unanimous selection. (Nov. 5) ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The No. 5 Washburn Ichabods finished up the regular season in heartbreaking fashion as they fell 28-21 in overtime at Missouri Western. However, with Central Missouri's 83-21 win over Pittsburg State, the Ichabods will not share the MIAA title as the Ichabods finished the conference slate with a 7-1 record. It is the first conference title of any kind for the Washburn football program since the 1983 team won the CSIC championship. (Oct. 8) MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Washburn Ichabods' Connor Sable connected on 23-yard field goal with :04 seconds remaining as Washburn knocked off its second top-five team in a week with a 31-28 win over No. 5 Northwest Missouri. The win lifted the Ichabods to 6-1 overall and alone into first place in the MIAA with a perfect 4-0 record. The loss dropped the Bearcats to 4-1 in the MIAA and 5-2 overall. (Aug. 27) GOLDEN, Colo. - Golden, Colo. – The Washburn Ichabods opened the 2005 season in fine fashion as they topped No. 14 ranked Colorado Mines 28-17. Jordan Brill connected with Sam Sissom on two touchdown passes of 62 and 72 yards to help WU to a 14-0 lead in the opening five minutes. Sissom set a school record with his 36th career touchdown reception with another score with just 29 seconds left in the opening half. In the process, the Ichabods won their fourth straight overall game since the 1988 season when they won four straight from Oct. 1 to Oct. 22. (Aug. 22) TOPEKA -- The Washburn Ichabods, coming off their first eight-win season since 1986, will open the 2005 season against the Colorado School of Mines. (Aug. 1) OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - The Washburn Ichabods were picked fourth in the 2005 MIAA Coaches Poll that was released this afternoon at the MIAA Football Media Day in Kansas City, Mo. at Arrowhead Stadium. The fourth place designation was the highest in school history for the Ichabods in the preseason coaches poll.
